Seven members played in this year's competition which was played over two sheets with all ten disciplines completed - we only managed two shots at the final discipline with four at the others.
The winner by a clear margin was Craig Thomson with a score of 43 points followed by Steven Harte (35) and John Fingland (32). Everyone seemed to enjoy the competition although there were the usual "why do we do this to ourselves?" comments. With two weeks to go we had 20 members signed up to play in this year's Xmas Bonspiel but the latest Covid flare up hit our numbers hard. On the night we had 13 playing and 11 who stayed for dinner. Smaller numbers meant there was more room for social distancing at the tables.
Four teams of three played two four end games each player throwing two stones with the winners of the first session playing off for 1st place and the losers playing to avoid 4th place. On the ice Team 1 prevailed and bottles of wine were presented to John Fingland, John Fraser and Clive Black. Yvonne Chalmers who played in the first three ends before passing on to John Fraser will also receive a bottle of wine. John Fraser's return to the ice after three years away started with an unbeaten draw to the button. The team who collected a non metallic traditional cooking implement for their efforts comprised Scott Martin, Clarke Perry and Malcolm Gauld. Eight members played in this year's Pairs competition, probably the lowest turnout ever. The competition was played as a round robin with each team playing a three end match against the other three teams, each player throwing three stones. After two hours of good competition the clear winners were Gerry & Brenda with three wins. It was Brenda's first Pairs competition so she can now boast a 100% success rate! In second place by the smallest of margins were Scott & Clarke who narrowly beat John F and Malcolm with a better shots up record by one shot.
Scott has been sent details of a potential new member who might improve our performance in Province competitions. Press here for details of Curly
The final league positions are shown on the competition page.
This year’s winners were Team 4 skipped by Max McGill with Douglas Dewar, Robin Turner and John Fingland. Team 3, skipped by Yvonne Chalmers with Gordon Nicolson, Jean McMaster and Ian McNair came a very close second with Team 5, skipped by Malcolm with John Duthie, Fraser Munro and Steven Harte a very close third. All three teams ended up with 6 points, Teams 3&4 both won 17 ends, but Team 4 won on shots up. Theoretically Team 5 were still in contention going into the last game of the league but an 8-0 end win and 21-0 shot victory was out of reach – they did win five ends and won 13-3 including a seven shot seventh end win. 18 members took part in the curling and Robin and Margaret joined us for dinner. The format was six teams of three playing three separate games. A trail run of no-sweeping between the hog lines was abandoned after the first two ends of play as everyone was freezing.
The results of the curling were very close. Team 1 had four points, four teams had three points and Team 5 ended up with two points. Bottles of wine were presented by President Gordon to Gerry, Charles & Jim. Traditional cooking implements were presented to Douglas and Stuart, Drew having left before dinner. I have saved his "prize" for presentation at our dinner in May. It was good to see Fraser and Charles back on the ice for the first time this season - no sign of rust in either of their games. Thanks again to President Gordon for his post game hospitality. The winners of this year's competition were John Fingland & Yvonne Chalmers who beat Craig Thomson & Peter Stewart in the final. In the first end John was lying three before his final shot - an open hit and stay for a five - drifted wide of its target. In the second end Craig had a chance to peel the game but his attempted raised double takeout was slightly wide and he could only score one. Final result, a 3-1 win to John & Yvonne.
Teams were drawn by lot at the start of the evening - last year's winners, John & Yvonne were drawn to play together again - claims of a fix will be firmly rebutted! 12 members took part in two mini leagues of three teams followed by semi finals and a final. The beaten semi finalists were Clarke Perry & Graeme Nicolson and Scott Martin & Max McGill. Fourteen members played in this year's Opening Bonspiel - two teams of four and two of three. After a three game round robin with players rotating positions after each end, the winners with two wins and a peel were Mark Lombardi, Jean McMaster and Max McGill. Runners up this year were Drew Fulton, John Fingland, Robin Turner and Peter Stewart.
Six members contested this year's points competition, down one from last year. Maybe the clash with Valentine's Day had something to do with the turnout (I doubt it!). I will be looking for more indications of support before we commit to our own ice next year - the option of playing our competition as a sub-set of the Province Points competition might be worthy of consideration.
The results on the night showed some improvement on last year's scoring with Steven Harte a clear winner on 40 points followed by Drew Fulton with 35 points. The Glasgow Province Points Competition followed on immediately after our competition but there were no volunteers to represent Drystanes, one points session on the night being enough for everyone. |
